Learn Japanese grammar: 【うけみけい】(ukemi kei). Meaning: Japanese passive form or passive voice. Often displayed as られる、される、こられる (rareru, sareru, korareru).

Passive verbs are verbs that are done to the (passive) subject.

Passive form conjugation samples


  • 食べ -> 食べ (taberareru)
  • -> 出 (derareru)
  • -> 寝 (nerareru)
  • 起き -> 起き (okirareru)
  • -> 着 (kirareru)


  • -> 聞 (kikareru)
  • -> 待 (matareru)
  • -> 飲 (nomareru)
  • -> 買 (kawareru)
  • -> 話 (hanaseru)

Important Notes

Be careful to not confuse this with , meaning the ability or inability to do something.
