Learn Japanese grammar: (saserareru). Meaning: causative-passive form; to be made to do something.

This is a combination of the Japanese “to make somebody do something” with the “to have done something”.

This becomes ‘causative passive form’, or in Japanese ‘使役受け身動詞’ (shieki ukemi doushi).

How to conjugate Causative Passive Form

First, you must conjugate the .

Step 2, replace the final る with られる.

  • 食べ → 食べ → 食べさせ
  • → 行 → 行かせ

Common う verbs (a + せられる)

  • 飲む -> 飲 (のませられる)
  • 書く -> 書 (かかせられる)
  • 読む -> 読 (よませられる)
  • 帰る -> 帰 (かえらせられる)
  • 聞く -> 聞 (きかれせられる)

Common る verbs (させられる)

  • 食べる -> 食べ (たべさせられる)
  • 起きる -> 起き (おきさせられる)
  • 寝る -> 寝 (ねさせられる)
  • 見る -> 見 (みさせられる)

Shorter version in spoken Japanese

Some verbs may use a shorter version in spoken Japanese.

For example, 飲まされる (のまされる) is commonly used when speaking, while 飲ませられる (のませられる) is more commonly used in written Japanese.

Another example is 待たされる (またされる) for spoken Japanese and 待たせられる (またせられる) for written Japanese.
