Learn Japanese grammar: (yori). Meaning: than; rather than; more than ~.

(yori) is used to say rather, rather than, or more than:

  • [A]、[B]。
    • Rather than [A], [B]…
    • [B] more than [A]

When used before an adjective, it translates to “more..”, and does not need a comparison [B] subject.

  • More beautiful

Different Meanings:

より can also mean “from” or “since” when used after a time or place, but this meaning is only needed for JLPT N2 and above. See lesson for JLPT N2 .

けさはいつもよりはやくがっこうへきました。
kesa wa itsumo yori hayaku gakkou he kimashita.
I came to school this morning earlier than usual.

かんじはひらがなやカタカナよりむずかしいだとおもいます。
kanji wa hiragana ya katakana yori muzukashii da to omoimasu.
I think kanji is more difficult than hiragana and katakana.

せんげつよりにほんごがじょうずになりましたね。
sengetsu yori nihongo ga jouzu ni narimashita ne.
You're Japanese has improved compared to last month. (could also interpret as since last month)

よりはやいそくどでやってみます。
yori hayai sokudo de yatte mimasu.
I'll try it at a faster speed. (when using より before an adjective, it translates to "more"

するどいナイフは、よりきれいにきれる。
surudoi naifu wa, yori kirei ni kireru.
A sharpened knife cuts more cleanly.
