Learn Japanese grammar: (koto ni suru) / (koto ni shimasu). Meaning: to decide on.

This is used to express what one has decided on of their own will. Add it after a verb to say that’s what you’ve decided on.

Example A)

ikanai koto ni suru.

I’ve decided to not go.

Different ways to use:

  • ことにする (koto ni suru) casual
  • ことにします (koto ni shimasu) more polite
  • ことにしている (koto ni shiteiru) current
  • ことにしています (koto ni shiteimasu) current polite
  • To use with a noun, remove the こと

kore kara mainichi ranningu o suru koto ni suru.
I've decided to go running every day from now on.

タバコをやめることにした。
tabako o yameru koto ni shita.
I've decided to quit smoking.
Example #3

はるやすみにかのじょといっしょにたいわんにいくことにします。
haruyasumi ni okusan to isshoni taiwan ni iku koto ni shimasu.
I've decided to go to Taiwan with my girlfriend during spring break.

ねるまえにたべないことにしました。
neru mae ni tabenai koto ni shimashita.
I've decided to stop eating before going to bed.

まいあさ、30ぷんジョギングすることにしています。
maiasa, 30 pun jogingu suru koto ni shite imasu.
I've decided to go jogging every morning for 30 minutes.

なつやすみにともだちとおきなわにりょこうすることにします。
natsu yasumi ni tomodachi to Okinawa ni ryokou suru koto ni shimasu.
I've decided to go to Okinawa over summer break with my friends.
Example #7

ふとらないようによる9じをすぎたら、わたしはたべないことにしています。
futoranai youni yoru 9 ji o sugi tara, watashi wa tabenai koto ni shite imasu.
In order to not gain weight, I've decided to stop eating anything after 9pm.

This is the best all around book for beginners learning Japanese in English. I used this in my first year studying Japanese. I found it to be far better and easier to use than the many other books I was using. This is the second book in the series and should cover most of what you need to pass JLPT N4.

Kanzen Master Jlpt Grammar N4

This book covers all of the grammar that you need to know to pass the JLPT N4, and includes great practice excercises. One down side though, is it's mostly in Japanese, but that will help you in the long run.

Jlpt N4 Japanese Lauguage Proficiency Test Official Practice Test

This is the official practice test of the JLPT N4. I highly recommend doing at least 1 practice test before taking the real test.
