Learn Japanese grammar: (mono da). Meaning: normally; in general; should~; must~.

When speaking, it is often shortened to もんだ (mon da).

Meaning 1 – normally; in general

This is used to express something considered to be common knowledge.

See examples 1~4.

Meaning 2 – should~; must~

This form can only be used with verbs.

To say “should not” or “must not”, change to ものじゃない (mono janai).

See examples 5~8.

Everybody makes mistakes.

ひとはみかけではわからないものだ。
hito wa mikake de wakaranai mono da.
People cannot be understood by just their outward appearance.

ひとはだれでもしっぱいするものです。
hito wa dare demo shippai suru mono desu.
Everybody experiences failure.
Example #4

たくさんうんどうしたらつかれるものです。
takusan undou shitara tsukareru mono desu.
Working out a lot will naturally make one tired.

こどもははやくねるもんだよ。
kodomo wa hayaku neru mon da yo.
Children must go to bed early.

ひとのわるぐちはいうものじゃない。
hito no waruguchi wa iu mono janai.
One should not say bad things of others.

おとしよりにはやさしくするものだ。
otoshi yori ni wa yasashiku suru mono da.
One should be kind to their elders.

しらないひとをかんたんにしんじるもんじゃないよ。
shiranai hito o kantan ni shinjiru mon janai yo.
You shouldn't easily trust people you don't know.
