Learn Japanese grammar: (dakedo) & (desu kedo). Meaning: but; however; although; regarding ~.

This is the conjunction particle preceded by a 「だ」 or 「です」.

To become more casual, this is usually further preceded with a 「の」 or 「ん」 to become 「のだけど」 or 「んだけど」.

Different meanings

  1. Show contrast: but; however; although (examples 1 ~ 4)
  2. Sentence ending with けど (examples 5 ~ 7)
    • Sometimes the sentence may end with けど, leaving the sentence unfinished to imply what the speaker wants to say without saying it directly.
    • This can be used to either soften the sentence or express the speakers emotions (frustration, anger, anxiety, etc.) or complaints.
  3. To bring up topics: regarding ~; as for ~ (examples 8 ~ 9)
