Learn Japanese grammar: (koto dakara). Meaning: because; since ~.

  • Because of [A], [B] ~
  • Since [A], [B] ~

There are two different ways that this grammar point can be used:

Usage Type #1) Guess / inference

This expresses a guess or inference, and can only be used with nouns.

yoku dekiru kanojo no koto dakara, goukaku wa machigai nai darou.

She will surely pass the exam because she does everything well.

Usage Type #2) Because of actual situation

zenin sorotta koto dakara, jikan mae dakeredo hajimemashouka.

It is not time to start yet, but since everyone is here, shall we go ahead and start?

Note, this second usage type can substitute ことだから (koto dakara) with ことだし (koto dashi), which is more common in spoken Japanese.

それは、わたしにとってじゅうようなことだからこたえて。
sore wa, watashi ni totte juuyou na koto dakara kotaete.
It is very important for me, so please answer it.
Example #2

あなたのことだからじょうじょうでしょう。
anata no koto dakara joujou deshou.
I'm sure you did an excellent (since it's you we're talking about).
Example #3

あかるいかのじょのことだから、どこへいってもすぐともだちができるでしょう。
akarui kanojo no koto dakara, doko e ittemo sugu tomodachi ga dekiru deshou.
Since she has a bright personality, she is able to make friends no matter where she goes.
Example #4

きゅうをようすることだからいそいでください。
kyuu o you suru koto dakara isoide kudasai.
Please hurry, it's urgent.

ケチでゆうめいなかれのことだからひゃくえんだってかしてくれないだろうな。
kechi de yuumei na kare no koto dakara hyakuen datte kashite kurenai darou na.
He's got a reputation of being stingy with money, so it's doubtful he'd lend even just 100 yen.
Example #6

もうだれもこないことだし、みせをしめよう。
mou daremo konai koto dashi, mise o shimeyou.
Since no one else will come, let's go ahead and close up shop.
Example #7

きみはちこくしたが、さくやのあとでのことだからむりはない。
kimi wa chikoku shita ga, sakuya no ato de no koto dakara muri wa nai.
You were late, but no wonder after last night.
