Learn Japanese grammar: 【そこなう / そこねる / そんじる】(sokonau / sokoneru / sonjiru). Meaning: to do something wrong; by mistake; to miss a chance; to fail to ~.

This expresses that one tried to do something, but failed for some reason. It can also express that although they are capable of doing this, they failed due to lack of caution or some other reason.

「損なう」「損ねる」「損じる」can all be used interchangeably.
