Learn Japanese grammar: (mada). Meaning: still; not yet.

  • (mada) is used to express “still” or “not yet”. It can be used with:
    1. a verb
    2. or a noun

Example A) Verb

まだ寝ているの?

mada neteiru no?

You’re still sleeping?

Example B) Noun

まだ高校生です。

mada koukou sei desu.

I’m still a high school student.

can also be used for extra emphasis.

mada mada atsui da.
It's still hot out. (mada can be used twice in a row for extra emphasis)

Our teacher still hasn't come.

もうじゅうじですがおとうとがまだねている。
mou juuji desu ga otou to ga mada neteiru.
It's already 10 am, but my younger brother is still sleeping.

まだいちじかんもあるよ。
mada ichijikan mo aru yo.
We still have one hour.
Example #6

あきらめるのはまだはやい!
akirameru no wa mada hayai!
It's still too early to give up!
Example #7

わたしはしゅくだいがまだおわっていません。
watashi wa shukudai ga mada owatteimasen.
I still haven't finished with my homework.
