Learn Japanese grammar: ことに (koto ni). Meaning: emphasize speaker’s feelings; to my (surprise/etc)
This sentence pattern is limited to being used with certain words.
Some of the most common ones include:
- 驚いた 【おどろいた】 = to my surprise~
- 悲しい 【かなしい】= to my sadness; sadly~
- 面白い【おもしろい】= to my amusement; interestingly~
- 残念な【ざんねんな】= unfortunately~
- 悔しい【くやしい】= to my pain~
- 困った【こまった】= to my trouble~
- 嬉しい【うれしい】= to my pleasure~
- ありがたい = thankfully~
