Learn Japanese grammar: があります (ga arimasu) & がある (ga aru). Meaning: used to say there is or something is for NON-LIVING things.
- This form can only be used with non-living things.
- For living things, use がいます (ga imasu) instead.
- The が is changed to a に/は for places.
- Can also mean to have or not have.
Example A) basic があります (ga arimasu)
- たくさんの宿題があります。
- takusan no shukudai ga arimasu.
- I have (there is) a lot of homework.
Example B) place にあります (ni arimasu)
- カバンがテーブルの上にあります。
- kaban ga teeburu no ue ni aru.
- Your bag is on the table.
Example C) asking a question
- 言いたいことがありますか?
- iitai koto ga arimasuka?
- Is there something you’d like to say?
Example D) Negative – is not / not have がありません (ga arimasen) / がない (ga nai)
- お金がないんだ。
- okane ga nai nda.
- I have no (there is no) money.
