Learn Japanese grammar: にせよ (ni seyo) / にしろ (ni shiro). Meaning: even if; regardless; whether… or.

Both of these can be used interchangeably.

As you can see in the conjugation table, there is an option to repeat this grammar more than once in the same sentence.

Single use にせよ/ にしろ

With a single use, the meaning is closer to: regardless of; even if.

Single Example 1

nani ni seyo / nani ni shiro

anyhow; in any case

Single Example 2

ikura isogashii ni seyo

No matter how busy you may be..

Multi use にせよ/ にしろ

When used twice in the same sentence, the meaning is mostly the same, but adds an “or” between the two items being introduced.

kuru ni seyo konai ni seyo

Whether you will come or not

熱が下がった場合でも
netsu ga sagatta ni seyo, shibaraku ansei ga hitsuyou desu.
Even if your fever has gone down, you still need to rest.
Example #2

どういう場合でも
jiko de jitensha ga mechakucha ni natta ga, nani ni shiro, daremo kega wo shinakute yokatta.
My bike got pretty messed up in an accident, but at any rate, I'm just glad nobody was hurt.
Example #3

欠席しても
kesseki suru ni seyo renraku wa shite kudasai.
Even if you will be absent, please contact us.
Example #4

づる場合でも来ない場合でも
kuru ni seyo konai ni seyo, kanarazu renraku wo irete kudasai.
Whether you will come or not, please make sure to inform us.
Example #5

どの駅に行く場合でも
koko wa fuben de dono eki ni iku niseyo, toho de 30 pun ijou kakaru.
This place is really inconvenient, since the closest train station is at least 30 minutes away by foot.
