Grammar Study Notes ()

Learn Japanese grammar: (ga iru) is used to say there is or something is for LIVING things. The verb can be changed to a negative (ga inai) to instead say that there is not or something is not.

Some important notes:

  • This form can only be used with living things.
  • For non-living things, use instead.
  • The が is changed to a に/は for places.
  • Can also mean to have or not have.

The verb (iru) comes from (iru), which is the verb for to be (for living things). However, when used in this grammar form, the hiragana form is used instead of the kanji form.

Let’s look at some basic examples.

Example 1) basic (ga iru)

shawaa ni wa dareka ga iru.

Someone is in the shower.

Example 2) place (ni iru)

ima doko ni iru no?

Where are you now?

Example 3) to have (ga iru)

kodomo ga imasu ka?

Do you have any children?

Example 4) Negative (ga inai)

iie, kodomo ga imasen.

No, I do not have any children.
